LET’S UNDERSTAND THE SIGNS

What have
you noticed?

Start with a few clear clues. Explore practical written guidance on the signs, the property and the next steps.

Skin photographs cannot diagnose a pest or a medical condition. NHS guidance (external page contains images).

Look at the room as well as the skin.
  • Note when marks appeared, but do not diagnose a pest from their pattern. Bed bugs, fleas and unrelated causes can look similar.
  • From an accessible position, use a torch to look along mattress seams, bed joints and nearby seating. Describe insects, shed material or repeated dark marks.
  • Do not take beds apart or move suspected belongings between rooms. If symptoms are worsening, seek advice from a pharmacist or health professional.
Explore bed-bug signs and lookalikes
Start with where, when and what changed.
  • Write down the time, room and whether the sound seems to come from a wall, floor or roof. Noise alone cannot identify an animal.
  • From a safe position, note damage to packaging, visible pipe gaps or roof openings. Do not touch suspected droppings or damaged cables.
  • Keep out of unsafe lofts and leave suspected occupied openings unsealed. An inspection can distinguish access routes from unrelated building noise.
Explore scratching and damage
The location can help narrow the question.
  • Was it near a sink or appliance, on bedding, in stored food, or alongside damaged fabric? Tell us the exact place.
  • Note whether it crawled, jumped or flew and its approximate size without getting closer to a stinging insect.
  • Textile damage and food-cupboard activity can have different causes. Avoid choosing a product until the likely source is understood.
Compare insect clues
You do not need a name before asking for help.
  • Describe what you noticed, when it began and the parts of the property involved.
  • A clear description is enough to start. Photographs are optional, and this guide works with reassuring pictures throughout.
  • Mention previous treatments, household needs and your postcode so the team can discuss an appropriate next step.
